Starting today, the game enters what Senior Director of Design Daniel Erickson refers to as the "2.0" era of the game's existence. A good 20 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode VII, the Force awakens now in Uprising.
"Obviously the Force itself is in a very specific place," Erickson said, referring to the game's post-Battle of Endor setting. The Emperor and Darth Vader are both dead, and Luke Skywalker has gone ... well, wherever he disappears to prior to the events of The Force Awakens.
"There are not Jedi running around. There are not Sith running around," Erickson continued. "This had been something we really wanted to establish [as the] norm in the galaxy first."
There may be more to the 2.0 era of Uprising, but Erickson can only say so much. He refuses to comment, for example, on whether or not we can expect to see the beginnings of Force Awakens story points like the First Order or the Knights of Ren.
"I absolutely can not talk about any of that," he said. Erickson admits to knowing more about the coming film than most people do, but like any fan he's trying to avoid spoilers. Working with Lucasfilm makes that easier than you might think.
"Everything is still, as you might imagine, very 'go in the white room and have the guards around" when it comes to research post-Return of the Jedi canon, Erickson explained.
"They are keeping the actual final piece more under wraps than I have ever seen in my 20 years in entertainment."
